Dedham is the county seat of Norfolk County, with a population of 25,364 at the 2020 census. It was first settled by European colonists in 1635 and incorporated in 1636, named after Dedham, Essex, in England. The town operates seven schools and is known for implementing the first tax-supported free public school system. Commuting from Dedham into Boston is fairly easy, thanks to a commuter rail service from Boston’s South Station, provided by the MBTA. It has stops at Endicott and Dedham Corporate Center on its Franklin line. The town also benefits from the MBTA bus service.
Contributing to preserving its rich history is the Dedham Village Historic District, encompassing the historic center of Dedham, Massachusetts. Its principal focus is a stretch of High Street between Bridge and Ames Streets, with most notable structures like the Norfolk County Courthouse, a National Historic Landmark. They solidify its place in history by listing the district in the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
